A Requiem For What Could Have Been

poetry for the broken

“I wrote these poems incrementally, but collated, edited, and recorded them collectively. A process that was at first therapeutic and then brutally revealing. A lot of the pieces touch upon regret, lost possibilities, and missed opportunities born of trauma, neglect, mental illness, and fear, as well as the desperation that comes when you find yourself searching for hope inside of darkness.”

What could’ve been and what is, are not the same thing. A lot of my pain comes from an inability to reconcile those two disparate facets of my existence. I know I can’t have everything I want, no one can. But when you are broken, it can be hard to know what you want, let alone have any idea of how to attain it.

“Reading this collection of work is like finding out you’re not as alone in your struggles, experiences, and feelings as you think you are.

Certain poems made me feel as though I found a long-lost twin. I had many moments while reading this where I thought, “Wow! This is exactly how that feels! Somebody actually gets it!” His poem, ‘A Page to Listen’, which is early on in the book, has a stanza that just gutted me because it’s a thought I’ve often had about my own journal and life. It reads: “when i had/nothing else/i had a pen to speak/and a page to listen”.

Humans are social creatures and quite a lot of mental health issues could really be helped with a strong sense of community with like-minded people. So, I feel like this collection of work is adding to that sense of community by showing the reader they aren’t alone, that these struggles and life experiences aren’t as isolated as we think they are. A book isn’t a proper substitution for actual people…but if you’re like me and you struggle hard with interacting and connecting to other people “in person”, it’s an excellent way to learn we aren’t as alone as we think we are.

From start to finish I couldn't put this book down. I admire all of Zach's work and think he is truly amazing especially his work on mental health. One of the most honest, in depth looks into the thoughts you’ve always had, but have been too scared to actualise. Cathartic from the first page to the last!
